Your Center For Connecting Business Surplus and Educational Need

Who We Are | What We Believe | Logo and Artist

Who we are:

We are Lori Heiges and Julie Williams, high school teachers in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Throughout our years of teaching, we saw a great need to redirect surplus materials from local businesses and put them into the hands of educators. Our vision led to a recycling organization like no other. CORE is a new and creative organization that will act as a center where business leaders and educators work together to provide surplus materials, volunteer services, and learning opportunities that enhance the education of students. This partnership is the CORE principle of our organization. We are inviting you to be part of this new organization as we collect surplus materials, monetary donations, and build new community connections.

What We Believe:

  • surplus materials from businesses are plentiful and are needed in education
  • educators and business leaders need opportunities to network and share ideas
  • volunteer opportunities are needed in both the business and educational sectors
  • hands-on teaching is a proven and preferred method of instruction
  • teachers need a steady supply of materials to create effective hands-on lessons

    About the Logo and Artist:

Chris Huante, a senior at R. Nelson Snider High School, submitted a Mandala Design from his Geometry class and it was chosen as the CORE logo. The word Mandala means “circle” in Sanskrit and is often used as a symbol to represent our core relationship with the universe. To learn more about Mandalas, go to http://www.mandalaproject.org/What/Index.html.

Chris was open and positive when answering some questions about his design and about hands-on projects in school.

How did you feel about this project?

    Chris:
It’s a great picture. I worked hard, so I am proud of the outcome

Describe your educational experience when you work with your hands.

Chris: I love hands on projects because I feel that you learn more when one actually interacts instead of just taking notes.

Describe the difference between leaning Geometry through lecture vs. learning Geometry through exploration.

Chris: Hands on, like I said, helps people learn not just more but also in a fun way. If we could learn more hands on things, we could be more successful.

    About the Webmasters and Website

The website was created and is maintained by students who were previously webmasters at R. Nelson Snider High School. Tyler Dray and Bobby Parker now attend Anthis Career Center where they take a programming class. They each also will be running another site as interns as part of the course curriculum.
